Danny was born and raised in South London, UK, and given his 12+ years living in America, he has a hybrid accent that is frequently mistaken for Australian (he doesn't mind). Danny has been a DJ turned model turned boxer, and he's had success in all three, even reaching number four in the world, according to Forbes. Don't mistake him for a pretty boy, though. He packs a solid punch, especially his left hook.
Danny's approach to fitness is fun and inclusive, an approach inspired by the humbling work of running around with his one-year old puppy, Gatsby, who is happiest when giving his all to chasing a ball.
“You cannot beat the people that do not quit!”
What form of exercise do you teach?
Boxing is at the core of everything I teach even when I’m not teaching boxing. I think it’s more important to have a reason for training and a marker for your growth and improvement. If we’re working abs or some form of body weight exercise it’s a helpful reminder as to why it’s important to have a strong core and legs for boxing.
What does your exercise do for you - outside and inside?
A healthy body is a healthy mind. Training for me and the pursuit of that greater self brings my whole life into perspective. Without it, I would not be able to accomplish the things I have. I think people measure their results on their physicality and appearance where as I tend to see what it does for me mentally. If the mind is good, the body will follow.
What is your favorite inspirational or motivational quote?
You cannot beat the people that do not quit!
What's your favorite reggae song? What does it mean to you?
I grew up listening to a lot of reggae, from UB40 to Peter Tosh to of course the king, Bob Marley. My mum was a huge fan and she had amazing record collection always blaring throughout the house. It’s a collection my family cherishes to this day, which she’ll be happy to know. R.I.P mum. So in answer to your questions, A lot! ha.
What does nature mean to you? How does it inspire you?
I think nature is the strongest reminder to who we really are, where we come from and more importantly, what we are. Which is children of earth. It’s easy to get caught up in the plight of modern life so having a connection with nature is essential if you want to keep your mind and your heart in order. It’s hard here in New York but I get out as regularly as I can and thankfully you don’t have to travel too far before you’re in the beautiful Forrests of Connecticut or Hudson Valley.
How can our natural world help bring people closer to their true natures?
Big question, wow. I’m not a philosopher and I don’t think I’m in a position to comment on the true nature of people nor would I even dare to hazard a guess but, I can certainly tell you that the natural world has enormous effect on me.
How can exercise make us stronger human beings, better able to connect with others and embrace everyone's right to thrive?
I like that, right to thrive. I guess a sunflower doesn’t question turning to follow the sun in it’s right and it’s very nature to thrive. There are a huge number of scientific explanations for this, from the release of endorphins to helping with depression as well as all the obvious health reasons but it’s important to feel good about yourself which gives you the room to feel good about others. In the event of an air plane crash (god forbid) you secure yourself first with your own oxygen mask before tending to anyone else. Exercise is way of checking in, improving, focusing, strengthening ourselves and only then can you truly take care of anyone else.
Why is it important for us to connect with other human beings?
Well there’s a reason that punishment in a prison full of rapists, murderers and hardened criminals is to put you in isolation, alone from everyone else and it is a true from of torture. The mind quickly destabilizes and a person can go insane within a matter of days. That just shows you how we need each other, more than I guess we’d care to admit at times. We’re all connected and all share the same energy source of consciousness and I look forward to a day it’s realized on a much larger scale. It must if we are to survive.
What does the phrase "One World, One Love" mean to you?
It symbolizes connectivity to me. We have one habitable space, as far as we are aware, on this unfathomably large, possibly infinite universe and that knowledge alone should be enough to realize our responsibility of love. In a universe of exercise platforms, what makes OneFirelight special? It comes from an authentic place of change, love and support driven by the desire to help people on their quest for unity.
There’s no better time than right now to discover your best self and embrace the world. Our community of instructors and members look forward to welcoming you.
